The Challenge
Help the Boston Center for the Arts develop one or more viable project concepts to guide redevelopment of its historic, overcrowded Artist Studios Building
Goals
- Identify viable concepts, options, and next steps for redevelopment
- Assess the BCA’s readiness to move forward
Scope of Work
Over four days – a Preliminary Feasibility Visit followed by a two-day charette – an Artspace team facilitated discussions, conducted focus groups with stakeholders, and solicited ideas for the Artist Studios Building. Our report addressed a range of options, from modest renovation to address code issues to a complete overhaul with significant additions at the back and/or front of the building.
Update
The BCA has secured support from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund and an individual donor to conduct a structural assessment of its Artist Studios Building, launching the critical step of determining the physical possibilities for the building to better serve the needs of working artists.
